The Laws of Simplicity

By

John Maeda

Technology and life only become complex if you let it be so

Quote

When your entire life is reduced, what memories might you enshrine? Life may be complex, but in the end, life is simple.

Effect of technology can be humorous, exhilarating enabler; it can be an exasperating disabler as well.

Comment

Technology is only as good as the user, the one who has the knowledge of how to operate the program, different levels for different people, same if any were to become a doctor, electrician, or a plumber.

Think of the power of Google which runs from a simple, lightweight text input box in your web browser to access Google’s vast network of computers and databases. You are spared having to house your own massive racks of computing equipment required to process a Google query. More appears like less by simply moving it far, far away. The experience is made simpler by keeping the result local, and moving the actual work to a far away location.

Remote servers have been the in things for a lot of business, where they can buy storage, for their program’s as well as their files, this comes with a manager to make storage feasible, but such storage comes at a price, for a small business may not be economical.

Where it is advisable to use an external hard drive in three different locations to store data, so that if one fails there is back up.

Security needs to be considered, for personal, medical, history, business data.

1. What does Maeda call the 3 keys?

Answer

Key 1 Away = More appears like less by simply moving it far, far away

Key 2 Open = Openness simplifies complexity

Key 3 Power = Use less, gain more

2. Describe how you have used these in your work towards TEN SQUARED? Give at least one example of each key.

Answer

Key 1 Away = More appears like less by simply moving it far, far away = using photo from same area interacting with similar visual colours and theme, using external USB stick or internet for further information

Key 2 Open = Openness simplifies complexity = with area photos a boarder adjoining a colour scheme, sourcing information using free graphic from on line information in Blog’s

Quote

With an open system, the power of the many can outweigh the power of the few

Unquote

Key 3 Power = Use less, gain more = in one banner less photos give clear view of area taken to descript area and what is there, in the computer world wireless is more with less, batteries can now last longer then 10 hours before recharging, so can be taken into remote area’s

3. Describe an incident in the production of TEN SQUARED where technology has been an enabler…. and another where it has been a disabler!

Answer

The programs learnt have been very helpful, but the computers when it gets the beach ball of death spiraling, time is lost if the computer crashes be saving it is time wasted

4. At this stage in the exhibition process you are all working on some element or process for the big event. List 3 things (in your current project) that you could take away to simplify and one thing you could add for meaning.

Answer

1/ one thing to take away, is too many reels of film to choose from, with no converter compatibility to work with

2/ too take away would be fundraising at end of semester, should be done at the beginning of semester

3/ Check sponsor list, start a new one

1/ One thing to add is a converter that is compatible to work with any film file source

The Law’s of Simplicity

By

John Maeda

http://free.clipartof.com/Quote

Some things cannot be made simple; knowing that simplicity can be elusive in certain cases is an opportunity to make more constructive use of your time in the future, instead of chasing after an apparently impossible goal.

Even when success is deemed as too costly or otherwise out of reach, a return on failure when you try to simplify which is to learn from your mistakes. When faced with failure, a good artist, or nay other member of the creative class, leverages the unfortunate event to radically shift perspective

One man’s failed experiment in simplicity can be another man’s success as a beautiful form of complexity for simplicity and complexity shift with subtle changes in point to view

1. Using Ten Squared as an example, describe an aspect of your work or something you have worked on, where you have found a symbiotic relationship that is both complexity and simplicity

Answer

Art in any form but one area comes to mind when doing hairdressing, the ability to manage hair whether cutting or styling, for hair comes in many textures e.g. thin, thick, then if colouring different shades where the hair has different absorptions rate of dye, yet knowing the fall over a cow-lick.

2. Provide a conceptual example of a situation that has arisen during this project where you have had a return on failure?

Answer

Using different programs such as Pro-tools or Final Cut a few was try try again if not right try again

3. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to the Ten Squared exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for TWO of the laws so far. Use your work towards and your examples.

Answer

Positive attitude, except what may be acceptable if it complements what you are doing, patients. E.g. fund raising [waiting for reply’s]

Every day the computer becomes increasingly smarter, it already knows your name, address, and credit card number, knowing where Aunt Mabel lives and having watched you write a letter to her before, the computer can send a fair approximation of a kindly email to her from you, just click an button and the deed could be done finished, but that price of not having to think is trust.

Learning how to swim is one example, with this come’s the enjoyment learning that you can advance, to the next level.

The goal of LEAN BACK is to achieve relaxation as the desired state, upon which audio and video can gradually invade, but not with intent to intrude. We can only truly relax when we trust that were in the finest hands and are treated with the best intentions.

Thus commitment is rendered meaningless when for every action; there is a corresponding un-action.

Learn to undo the trust when not deserved

Your mailing list would have to be accurate with name and addresses up to date, you may compose a letter whether business or personal that could go to many, which then the computer would deal with, but if it was a sensitive matter business or personal, it would be better to compose a letter for that subjects intent.

For not all can be trusted to the computer, some need individual attention, in water you need to trust that you can float, and that there is a person near you that if you go under knows how to swim, more so if you are a beginner LEAN BACK AND FLOAT, children have this trust for they are experiencing the world for the first time, so in love they trust.

Some lean back’s have a price attached only some are free, if you were in a restaurant the chef cooks but the meal is not free but you lean back let some one else do the cooking so there is a price attached to the meal.

That which is free may be looking at the sun set or feeling the wind on your face standing on top of a hill, looking at a view over the ocean, these lean backs are free.

Computer program’s that may help you have it easier with compiling your subject are not free some have a limited free trial but in the end you need to decide to buy or not, to rely on the spelling correction in a computer depends if you are Australian or American spelling, if you keep trusting the computer with out checking you could end up with a letter that is not readable, look before you hit the change button.

QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Provide an example of a situation where you have to have trust – in the same vein as the author in his swimming lesson example. What made you trust in this situation and how did you feel?

Answer

Government in all departments that they are doing the best for a community, some times I think their got a method in their madness, it’s the same as walking across the street in heavy traffic, pray that a car does not hit you.

2. Where in our exhibition do we need to instill trust? Give examples. How are we going to achieve this?

Answer

With each other we trust, that each are doing what they are suppose to do, with back up if there is a failing e.g. accident, sickness. With exhibition make people welcomed with hospitality, offering nibbles and drinks with location map to see exhibitions.

3. What strategies are used to instill trust? Examples? Where do we need to employ this in Ten Squared? How are we going to do this?

Answer

To enjoy what you are learning to relax, chill out have some fun, reliability, communication.

4. If you could “undo” any aspect of the preparation for the exhibition to-date, what would you “undo”? With this in mind, what would you change now in your preparation strategy to overcome having to “undo” anything?

Answer

If undoing be careful what you undo that it is the correct thread to pull, for if the wrong one all would unravel, like a string of wool in a jumper, in the exhibition time line should have started earlier, sponsors should have been contacted last year, fund raising should be done for the next year.

5. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to the up here exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for each of the laws so far.

Answer

Using what is already available and extending on it

Laws of Simplicity

EMOTION THE 7TH LAW

MORE EMOTIONS ARE BETTER THAN LESS

Animation from http://www.animationlibrary.com/animation/23674/Alligator_3/

Quote

Can simplicity be considered ugly?

Neon flowers, bejeweled frogs, other decorative essentials that are bling are these simplicity/

Rational perspective simplicity makes economic sense; simple objects are easier and less expensive to produce?

Cost effective for the consumer with low prices, a simple line of furniture cost effect benefits the frugal shopper.

But many decision are not made with logic, some like the bling factor, for a strong sense of self-expression in all humans.

THE SEVENTH LAW is not for every one, there are those who only want black or white with clear-mirrored surfaces

But for those who have emotion the 7th Law applies, which seems to contradict the first Law of Reduce, where in principle to determine the right kind of more or feel, and feel to look at your own feelings. And connect with emotional intelligence inside yourself, then the environment that surrounds use for, Form follows function, feeling follows form, then the move towards complexity and away from simplicity that sometimes is required.

Self-expression need to balance with a sense of human warmth while the object retains its pure, simple and cool nakedness, its clothing can keep it warm, e.g. a cover for a mobile phone, can be personalized,

Unquote

Comment

Why you may ask – because of the human need to better express emotion- to capture the essence of communication, this may come in different forms, the cartoon character in animation does not pose a threat, one may look at it and be amused, so interfacing through animation or character form soften textual conversations with out the facial cues speaking though text dominates.

The Muppet which are a puppet character first was studied in the fifties found that children were not frighten of such figures, so puppets like Noddy, Big-ears, Miss Piggy, Kermit, Elmo and the Cookie Monster came a-bought

http://www.activitytv.com/36-how-to-be-a-puppeteer

With clothing the object, who can remember their grandmother putting a teacozy on the teapot, or a cover on the hot water bottle, a doily on the radio, these days we have gone to carry accessories to protect the IPOD, Portable Computer, which express our feelings for our objects

Quote

The belief in the spirit living within all objects / or sense of attachment one can feel for an artifact and acknowledging the existence/ helps the designer to make artifacts that people will feel for, care for, and own for a lifetime.

ROE

RETURN ON EMOTION

A certain kind of more is always better than less more care, more love, and more meaningful actions

QUESTIONNAIRE

1.   When Maeda uses the “Feel, and feel for” principle, he is drawing on people’s connection to a very personal experience: feelings. List 3 ways that would make use of this principle to visitors of your exhibition.

Answer-Something to give that is personalized e.g.= business card, flyer with piece of art printed on back, a postcard or magnet for fridge.

2. What is animism? Why do you think the “Tamagocchi” craze of the ‘90s became such a craze? How can you apply this to your exhibition?

Answer- something that is catchy that people want, vibrant

3. Name 2 products that you have purchased that gave you that feeling of “Aichaku”.

What feelings did those products evoke? Was it the feeling that sold the product to you?

Answer- Lap-top for learning, communication by Skip or writing letter’s email, viewing movies or listening to music

Mobile phone= communication at all times

4. How do the references to emotion relate to the simplicity/complexity relationship discussed in Law 5 -Differences?

Answer- People will personalize items whether simplicity or complexity add emotion to an item
