Reference quotes

Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful

Ten laws

1. Reduce

The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction

To remove functionality e.g. if they have to many buttons DVD players could only have one, remove the others, but then where would the balance be between simplicity and complexity be

How simple can you make it?

How complex does it have to be?

For an ideal state of simplicity can be complex once decided what can be moved or reduced

Reduction can be beneficial but not necessarily the rule, to add technology features just because one can, unless used can be over whelming, features and functions that the user has no need for.

Using guidelines one can us less but achieve more

2. Organize

Organization makes a system of many appear fewer

3. Time

Savings in time feel like simplicity

4. Learn

Knowledge makes everything simpler

5. Differences

Simplicity and complexity need each other, eg change over effect led by technology

6. Context

What lies in the periphery of simplicity is definitely not a peripheral

7. Emotion

More emotions are better than less

8. Trust

In simplicity we trust

9. Failure

Some things can never be made simple

10. The one

Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful

SHE

Shrink hide embody

Consumers will only be drawn to smaller, less functional products if they perceive it functional to their need

Whether less or more is to increase belief in quality

The power of suggestion

Products can be of precious materials and exquisite craftsmanship, for what we own can change how we feel with quality in mind, the necessity to advertise some products point , that which cannot be conveyed or seen , for a product to become interesting to have a owner who wishes to purchase when in the business world of supply and demand.

THREE KEYS

  1. Away More appears like less by simply moving it far, far away
  2. Open Openness simplifies complexity
  3. Power Use less, gain more

Comments

When working in hospitality with some that have eating disorder’s, instead of using a large plate a small one is used, e.g. instead of a dinner plate use a bread and butter plate, take the food of the dinner plate and put on the bread and butter plate the same amount of food looks smaller, and makes the person concerned think smaller amount when it is really the same.

With clutter the same thinking can apply if, every thing in its place once stored neatly there does not seem to be the clutter if it was every where, so even a room can appear larger.

In dress making a lot is kept simply even a firm has its name after the word

When designing John Maeda in his book THE LAWS OF SIMPLICITY apply even in industry design, the trick is to keep simple and functional, in program designing the law is double important for the programmer has to take into consideration the functions and usability, and user friendly

  1. Great post Carol and I like your reflection on what we are discussing through the bok. Great example of how you related your own experiences in hospitality to the laws of simplicity. A very simple solution to a very complex issue!

I really like the images you are including and the links also. Keep an eye on the formatting, for some reason the headings are sitting off to the left.

    Keep up the good work.
